How to create a barcode
- 01Choose the type
Pick the right symbology: CODE 128 for general use, EAN and UPC for products, ITF-14 for shipping cartons.

- 03Generate and download
Adjust colors and dimensions, press Generate, then download as PNG, JPEG or SVG.
What is a barcode generator?
It turns text or numbers into bars that a scanner can read, and the code is built in your browser without uploading data to a server. Every symbology allows a different character set and length, and the tool verifies both before generating, including the check digit in EAN, UPC and ITF-14.
Barcode types and when to use them
- CODE 128: Most common: Latin letters, digits and symbols
- EAN-13: Global retail products - 12 or 13 digits
- EAN-8: Small products - 7 or 8 digits
- UPC-A: North American standard - 11 or 12 digits
- CODE 39: Industrial use - uppercase letters, digits and selected symbols
- ITF-14: Shipping and distribution - 13 or 14 digits
- MSI Plessey: Warehouses and libraries - digits only
- Pharmacode: Pharmaceutical industry - number from 3 to 131070
Printing and scanning tips
- Use dark bars on a light background; most scanners cannot read an inverted barcode.
- Respect the required length and check digit for each type, especially EAN and UPC.
- Leave enough margin around the barcode and test it with a scanner before a large print run.
- Prefer PNG or SVG over JPEG; JPEG compression adds artifacts that can stop some scanners.
Frequently asked questions
Is the tool free?
Yes, generating and downloading are free and require no account.
Which type should I choose for retail products?
Use EAN-13 in most countries and UPC-A in the United States and Canada. If you enter 12 digits for EAN-13 or 11 for UPC-A, the tool computes the check digit automatically.
Can I encode Arabic text in a barcode?
No. The supported symbologies encode Latin letters, digits and standard symbols only. Use a QR code for Arabic text.
Why do I get a check-digit error?
The last digit of EAN, UPC and ITF-14 is a checksum calculated from the other digits. Enter only 12 digits for EAN-13 to have it computed, or correct the last digit as shown in the message.
Which formats can I download?
PNG and JPEG as raster images, and SVG as a vector format suitable for print and scaling.
