What happens when you convert a PDF to images?
Your browser opens the PDF with pdf.js and draws each page onto a canvas at the dimensions set by the chosen scale, then encodes that canvas as a PNG or JPEG image. Everything runs on your device, so neither the PDF nor the exported images are uploaded to any server.
The output is images, not text
Each page comes out as a flat raster image: the text stays visible to the eye but loses selection, search and copy, and the page can no longer be edited or restyled. The exported images are often larger than the source PDF, so keep the original whenever you need its text or editability.
Performance and memory
Pages are rendered one at a time and each page’s resources are released afterwards, but the exported images stay in browser memory until you download them or start over. PDFs with many pages or a 3× scale use more time and memory; close unnecessary tabs, and if processing stalls, try a lower resolution.

- Use PNG for text and graphics that need full clarity, and JPEG for photos.
- Start with 2× and go up to 3× only when you need finer detail.
- For large files, convert them in batches to keep memory use lower.
Frequently asked questions
What file limits apply?
One PDF between 1 KB and 100 MB. Pages are converted one at a time, so conversion takes longer with more pages and a higher resolution scale.
How do I choose the format and quality?
PNG is lossless and suits text and graphics but produces larger files. JPEG is smaller and has a quality slider from 0.5 to 0.95; higher values look sharper and take more space. The 1×, 2× and 3× scale sets the pixel dimensions of each exported image.
Can I download all pages at once?
Yes. “Download all (ZIP)” bundles every image into a ZIP file built in your browser with JSZip, with nothing uploaded. You can also download each image separately.
My file will not open. Why?
Password-protected or damaged PDFs cannot be converted. Remove the password from the original file first or make sure it is not corrupted, then try again.
Why do I get images instead of selectable text?
Conversion draws each page onto a canvas and saves it as a picture, so the result is a raster image that works in slides, design and editing tools that do not accept PDF — but any text inside it cannot be selected, searched or copied. If you need searchable text, use a PDF text extractor or OCR instead.
