How is VAT calculated?

The standard VAT rate in Saudi Arabia is 15%, with 5% applied to specific sectors under the transitional rules. In add mode, VAT = amount before tax × rate ÷ 100 and gross = amount + VAT. In extract mode, the net is derived from the gross: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), then VAT = gross − net.

Pre-tax amount vs VAT-inclusive amount

The pre-tax (net) amount is the value of the good or service without tax; it is the base on which VAT is computed and is often shown on an invoice as the taxable base. The VAT-inclusive amount is what the customer actually pays, meaning the net plus VAT. The two are often confused: if the figure you have is what was paid, use extract mode; if you are building a price from its base, use add mode.

Rounding and accuracy

Results are shown rounded to two decimals (halalas). In extract mode the net is rounded first and VAT is then derived as the difference between gross and net, so net plus VAT equals the gross exactly after rounding. Always check ZATCA e-invoicing requirements for the rounding method you must adopt.

Frequently asked questions

Which VAT rate applies now?

The standard rate in Saudi Arabia is 15%, and 5% applies to specific sectors under the transitional rules. Use the custom rate for any other percentage.

What is the difference between add and extract modes?

Add mode starts from a pre-tax amount and adds VAT to reach the gross. Extract mode starts from a VAT-inclusive amount and separates the net and the VAT from it.

How do I extract VAT from an amount at 15%?

Divide the VAT-inclusive amount by 1.15 to get the net, then subtract the net from the gross to get the VAT. The calculator applies exactly this in extract mode.

Does this replace a tax invoice?

No. It is an estimation and checking tool only; tax invoices are subject to the requirements and rules issued by ZATCA.

Can I use a custom rate such as 7.5%?

Yes. Choose “Custom rate” and enter the percentage. Use it for estimates or other tax systems, but statutory rates in Saudi Arabia are set by ZATCA.
